OEM heel guard required for brake side

Posted by Arthur Ranney on 8th Apr 2025

These comments apply to a 2024 Kawasaki ZX-6R 40th Anniversary Edition with ABS. On the brake side: Graves doesn't provide a fancy heel guard for the brake side, so you're stuck with the plain aluminum OEM heel guard on the brake side. I assume it's a cost-cutting measure--and it looks like it. Now I know why they only show the shifter side in photos. Deceptive advertising, in my opinion. The OEM bolts to hold the heel guard have a short shoulder to match the slightly oversized holes in the heel guard, but those bolts are not usable with the Graves unit, which is not countersunk. The Graves bolts, therefore, are slightly smaller than the holes in the heel guard, so there is some slop in the fitment. When the bolts are tightened, the slop goes away, but it's annoying to have this sort of oversight in a premium-priced product. Be aware that you will need to "adjust" (bend) the brake fluid pressure line quite a bit to get the unit mounted. On the shifter side: Only one threaded shift rod is provided, so getting the proper angle on the shift lever might be an issue for those who want a relatively steep lever angle along with the most aggressive footpeg position (up and back). I think the threaded rod should be about 10 mm longer, or two rods should be provided. Fortunately, the shift rod is threaded correctly--right-handed on one end, left-handed on the other--so it works with the OEM quickshifter. Overall: The unit was shipped without a parts list or diagram. I had to go to the Graves website to discover that the kit doesn't include a brake-side heel guard. (I thought I was missing a piece.) Other than these annoyances, this is a well-designed unit. Simple, sturdy, smooth operation.
