Electronically adjustable suspension system. The most important functional advantage of the Öhlins system is the intelligent damping adjustment.
When set in the comfort damping mode, the shock's damping is automatically adjusted depending on the speed ridden. The damping level increases with higher speeds. When the speed is reduced, the damping automatically returns to a softer setting.
The BMW ESA system is a fantastic and revolutionary concept. Unfortunately however, the actual shock absorber units are not everything that they could be. With the Öhlins Mechatronics system, you can have a world-class suspension and still retain all of the benefits of ESA. With this system, Öhlins has taken something good and made it vastly better.
The Mecatronics set consists of a TTX36 shock absorber at the front and a newly developed TTX39 at the rear. These are controlled by an Öhlins ECU that is easily installed and compatible with the original ESA. It interacts directly with the BMW R1200 GS CAN bus network and existing user interface.
The system is controlled by the existing ESA control buttons and dash display. The system offers significantly improved tire feeling and ride comfort. It has added benefits such as compression and rebound damping adjusters both front and rear. It operates within the same driving modes as the original system but with the added feature of a smart semi-active EC function in comfort mode where the damping levels are automatically increased with speed.
The Öhlins modular construction system makes it possible to completely disassemble the shock for routine servicing and repairs. Should servicing become necessary, you will have like new performance restored and for this reason, the shock will certainly last for the lifetime of the motorcycle.
